Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on the 24th of August 1972 on the 24th of August 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay started to discover her artistic and creative side as a child because of her Aunt Denise. Her aunt, a night-shift nurse, allowed her to study literature for art as well as theatre in daylight. DuVernay loved the film West Side Story, which she introduced to her. DuVernay recognized that art is an effective tool for promoting activism. DuVernay was educated by her mother who had a social conscience and encouraged DuVernay to show her creativity through art. DuVernay's Dad recalled seeing the Civil Rights Movement's historic march along the Edmund Pettus Bridge near the town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay was influenced by her summers in Selma, and later directed a documentary about King's father, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay completed Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood, California in 1990. After graduation, she studied in the University of California Los Angeles where she earned degrees in English as well as African American study. DuVernay began to produce in broadcast journalism when she was still in college. As an intern, she worked for CBS News at the time of O.J. Simpson Trial. DuVernay recalled being given an assignment to watch the residence and scrutinizing the waste belonging to one of the jury. Her tasks to accomplish left her unsatisfied and, following her decision to not pursue the field of journalism, she was able to move to the world of publicity. DuVernay started her first job as a publicity specialist in a small production studio right out of school. The company she founded for her own PR, The DuVernay Agency was established in 1999. In addition to PR, the company established several lifestyle platforms like Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful.
